Why you overpay — in one minute
Abroad, terminals and websites ask "pay in local or your home currency?". Home currency triggers DCC (Dynamic Currency Conversion): the merchant's side pads the rate by 3%–7%. Local currency lets the card network convert near the mid-market rate — usually much cheaper.
Network conversion: near mid-market
Currency conversion fee: ~1%–1.5% when routed via USD (UnionPay often waives it)
Foreign transaction fee: charged by your issuer, 0%–3%
DCC markup: only if you pick home currency, 3%–7%
Rule of thumb: always pick local currency; use a no-foreign-fee card; Chinese cards via UnionPay avoid the conversion fee.
