Many assume there's just one fee abroad. In reality fees stack in layers — knowing each is how you understand where the money goes:
Who / how much |
|---|---|
Visa/MC/UnionPay, near mid-market |
3%~7%Merchant markup if you pick home currency, 3%–7% |
At terminals and checkout pages abroad you're often asked to pay in local or your home currency. Home currency triggers DCC — the merchant converts and pads the rate by 3%–7%, sold as "convenience". Local currency lets the network convert near mid-market — almost always cheaper. Rule: always pick local currency. See what is DCC.
Visa and Mastercard barely differ (both near mid-market). The real gap is UnionPay vs Visa/Mastercard: non-USD spending on Visa/MC is often routed via USD (a ~1.5% conversion fee), while UnionPay converts directly and usually waives it for CNY. So: in non-USD regions with a CNY card, prefer UnionPay; still pick local currency at checkout. Plug your fees into the calculator to compare all three.
ATMs also ask "in your currency?" — again pick local currency. Note: many charge a fixed operator fee ($2–7); credit-card cash advances carry a fee and accrue interest from day one, so prefer paying by card. See ATM traps.
Check your statement: if a foreign purchase posts directly in your home currency (not the local one converted by your bank), it was likely DCC. Compare the price, the amount charged and the mid-market rate — over ~3% above mid-market confirms it. Use the receipt checker to quantify the loss.
